Nepal's Madhesi party formally lifts Nepal-India border blockade

Xinhua, February 9, 2016 Adjust font size:

Nepal's United Democratic Madhesi Front on Monday formally lifted its more than four months long Nepal-India border blockade.

An announcement about the move came from the party Monday, although the vehicular movement at the major Nepal-India border checkpoint - Birgunj-Raxaul had resumed on Friday noon.

"Considering the current situation of the country, need of people and their suggestions, we are withdrawing the blockade at border points and strikes." it said in the statement.

However, the party added that it will continue other forms of protests "in an effective manner."

The party has decided to hold rallies and assemblies in different district headquarters along with expanding protests in the capital as well.

The party's protest against the newly adopted constitution has badly crippled the Nepalese lives through fuel crisis and scarcity of essential commodities.

The withdrawal of protest came just ahead of Nepalese Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli's India visit scheduled for the third week of February. Endit
