Sri Lanka, India discuss fishermen issue

COLOMBO, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) - Sri Lanka and India on Friday held wide ranging discussions in several areas including the Indo-Sri Lanka fishermen issue and Sri Lanka's development on a war crimes probe.

Indian Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj who arrived in the country on a two-day official visit for the the 9th Session of the India-Sri Lanka Joint Commission held discussions with Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera.

In discussions with Samaraweera during the Joint Commission, both countries accepted to find a long lasting solution to the fishermen issue which had affected both countries.

India also extended an invitation to Sri Lanka's fisheries minister to visit India to discuss the matter further, which was accepted by the Sri Lankan government.

Both countries have been trying to resolve the long standing fishermen issue with fishermen from both sides having to face arrest and boats being detained when they stray into each other's waters illegally.

Some of the other areas discussed between the two countries were tourism, development and counter terrorism.

At the conclusion of the Joint Commission, two MoUs between India and Sri Lanka for the renovation of schools in the former war-torn north and the construction of a surgical unit and supply of medical equipment to a teaching hospital in the east, were signed. Endit
