60th Vienna Opera Ball kicks off in Austria

Xinhua, February 5, 2016 Adjust font size:

The 60th edition of the Vienna Opera Ball, one of the highlights of the annual Viennese carnival season, kicked off in the State Opera on Thursday.

Prominent guests, including Austrian President Heinz Fischer, arrived at the event amid tight security.

Spanish tenor Placido Domingo described the ball as "very special," noting that it is the climax of Austrian social events each year, and he was glad so many young people attended the event.

Domingo, in his third visit to the event, is expected to conduct the Vienna State Opera Orchestra and sing a duet with Russian soprano Olga Peretyatko.

Also sighted was American film and television star Brooke Shields, who arrived at the event in a limousine together with Austrian entrepreneur and socialite Richard Lugner.

French actor Alain Delon was expected to attend the event but had suffered from faintness earlier in the day and canceled. Endi
