Indian PM pays tribute to soldiers dead in avalanche in Indian-controlled Kashmir

Xinhua, February 5, 2016 Adjust font size:

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi Thursday paid tribute to the 10 Indian Army soldiers who were killed by avalanche in the Siachen Glacier in Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"Demise of soldiers in Siachen is very tragic. I salute the brave soldiers who gave their lives to the nation," he twitted.

Indian Defence Ministry had earlier said that chances of finding the soldiers "are very remote". Later the military confirmed their death.

The soldiers were trapped under snow after an avalanche hit their camp at 19,600 feet in the Northern Glacier sector in the Ladakh region of Indian-controlled Kashmir on Wednesday.

The Indian military conducted intensified operation Thursday to look for them with the induction of specialized teams, sniffer dogs and equipment. Endit
