India orders probe into brutal attack on Tanzanian woman

Xinhua, February 4, 2016 Adjust font size:

India has described the brutal attack on a young Tanzanian woman in the southern city of Bengaluru as "shameful" and ordered a major probe into the incident.

"We are deeply pained over the shameful incident with a Tanzanian girl in Bengaluru," Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj tweeted late Wednesday evening.

Her comments came in the wake of the Tanzanian Embassy calling upon India to take action in the horrific incident that has sent shockwaves through the country.

In fact, the incident happened Sunday night when the 21-year-old Tanzanian college student was passing through a spot where a woman pedestrian had been run over by another car 30 minutes before.

An angry mob of over 200 people which had gathered there vented out their anger on her, dragging her out of a car she was travelling in, thrashing and stripping her and setting on fire the vehicle.

Bengaluru Police chief N.S. Megharikh told the media that several people have been detained in connection with the incident but no one has been arrested yet. Endit
