Three soldiers were killed in separate encounters with the leftist New People's Army (NPA) in southern Philippine province of Compostela Valley, local military said Thursday.

Rhyan Batchar, public affairs office chief of the Army's 10th Infantry Division, said that the operating troops of the 46th Infantry Battalion engaged the leftist rebels belonging to Pulang Bagani Command 3 of the Southern Mindanao Regional Committee in Pantukan town on Wednesday.

The first incident took place in Tibagon village when a platoon of soldiers clashed for about 30 minutes with around 60 rebels. The rebels detonated improvised explosive devices, killing two soldiers and wounding two others.

The second encounter happened at Napnapan village when around 10 rebels fired upon a platoon of soldiers, killing a government trooper.

The NPA, armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, has been waging a guerrilla campaign against the government in the countryside for four decades. Military estimates the NPA strength at more than 4,000 men scattered in more than 60 guerrilla fronts throughout the country. Endit
