Slovakia to contribute millions of euro towards solution to migration crisis

Xinhua, February 4, 2016 Adjust font size:

Slovakia will pay 5.3 million euros (5.8 million U.S. dollars) by April 15 via funds of the European Union and the UN network aimed at dealing with the current migration crisis, the Slovak government announced on Wednesday.

The government has voluntarily earmarked the highest share of the money, 3.0 million euros, for the EU regional trust fund in response to the syrian crisis, MADAD, which was established in December 2014.

The money should be used to cover the needs of refugees in Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon, Turkey and other countries hit by the Syrian crisis.

Slovakia will contribute an additional 1.7 million euros to funds and programs within the UN network. The remaining 600,000 euros will be divided among the UN fund for mediation and preventive diplomacy, the crisis prevention and recovery fund, and the peacebuilding fund.

Slovakia's voluntary commitment to relocate 100 people from Greece and Italy and resettle an additional 100 people from third countries that unambiguously need international protection remains in force. Endit
