Syrian opposition urges int'l community to create conditions for political solution

Xinhua, February 4, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Syrian main opposition High Negotiations Committee (HNC) spokesman Salem Al-Meslet on Wednesday urged the international community to take concrete actions to alleviate the suffering in Syria and create the necessary conditions for a political solution.

In a media statement ahead of the 2016 Supporting Syria and the Region Conference that will be held in London on Feb. 4, Meslet said that if the international community is serious about addressing the root causes of the Syria conflict and reaching a political solution in Geneva, then it must get serious about protecting Syrian civilians and enforcing UN Security Council resolution 2254.

"Action, not aid, will stop this crisis," he noted.

He added that Syrians need concrete action from the international community to stop the indiscriminate bombardment, which is the primary killer of civilians and driver of refugees.

"We need action to break the sieges across Syria, including feasible options such as airdrops as called for by the UN Humanitarian Chief Stephen O'Brien," he said.

The new round of the intra-Syrian peace talks entered its third day in Geneva Wednesday, with no sign of progress in sight as no official meetings were announced throughout the day.

The Syrian opposition was scheduled to speak to the press Wednesday afternoon, but later the event was postponed until further notice.

The United Nations Special Envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, is supposed to address the press at a Geneva hotel Wednesday evening. Endit
