Stuttgart's new arrival Federico Barba suffers injury blow

Xinhua, February 4, 2016 Adjust font size:

Federico Barba has sustained a calf injury in a test match to remain out of action, Stuttgart announced in an official statement on Wednesday.

Stuttgart reinforced their defence with the signing of Empoli defender Barba at the final day of the transfer window on Monday.

One day later, on Tuesday, Stuttgart's new arrival was tested in a friendly against lower league side SG Sonnenhof Grossaspach and sustained a calf injury, which keeps him sidelined for "presumably six weeks".

"That's just incredible bad luck. Federico was physically in top condition as the results of our medical examination showed. We have to keep the boy's head up and focus on the rehabilitation. We will support him where we can," Stuttgart's sporting director Robin Dutt said.

The 22-year-old defender joined Stuttgart until the end of the season. After the loan spell, the "Swabians" have the chance to make the deal permanent.

Stuttgart, who sit on the edge of the drop zone, visit Frankfurt at the 20th round in Bundesliga on Feb. 6. Endit
