Xinhua, February 1, 2016 Adjust font size:

The 26th African Union (AU) summit that wrapped up on Sunday in Ethiopia's capital Addis Ababa has commended all stakeholders and partners who supported AU's interventions in the fight against the Ebola epidemic.

During its closing ceremony after a two-day deliberations, the 26th Ordinary session of the AU Assembly witnessed the appreciation for stakeholders who supported the AU's efforts to end the deadly disease.

Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, Chairperson of the AU Commission, appreciated and acknowledged the African states and governments'efforts in the combat against Ebola and formally closed the AU Support to the Ebola Outbreak in West Africa (ASEOWA) mission.

Through the efforts of the AU Commission, the pan-African bloc had sent 855 health workers to the Ebola affected countries, according to Zuma.

In her remarks, she paid tribute to those at the frontline, who had paid the ultimate price with their lives, the private sector, international organizations as well as all the countries that had supported the mission.

She extended a special appreciation to the young health workers who resigned from their respective jobs and volunteered willingly to assist in the spirit of Pan Africanism and solidarity.

Zuma appealed to heads of states and governments to work together to establish the Centre for Disease Control (CDC) and also expand the Africa Risk Capacity in order to better respond to outbreaks. Endit
