Indian PM pays tributes to national icon Mahatma Gandhi

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi Saturday paid tribute to the country's pre-independence icon Mahatma Gandhi on his death anniversary.
"Salutations to beloved Bapu on his Punya Tithi," Modi tweeted, remembering the Father of the Nation as Gandhi is popularly known as for his contributions to India's struggle for independence.
The Indian prime minister also paid respects to the pre-independence martyrs who had sacrificed their lives for the country.
"Remembering the valour of all martyrs who gave their lives for the nation. Their sacrifices remain etched in our memory," Modi tweeted.
Gandhi had led India to independence in 1947 from the colonial British rule by applying non-violent civil disobedience and inspiring movements for civil rights and freedom across the world.
Born on October 2, 1869, Gandhi was assassinated by a Hindu nationalist, Nathuram Godse, on January 30, 1948. Endit
