Syrian opposition group leaves Riyadh to participate in Geneva talks

Xinhua, January 30, 2016 Adjust font size:

The largest Syrian opposition group of 17 members is leaving on Saturday morning for Geneva to participate in the UN-sponsored talks on the Syria crisis, local media reported.

The Syrian Opposition High Negotiation Committee (HNC) spokesperson said the delegation will arrive Saturday evening, while the HNC head, Dr. Riyadh Hijab, will follow them on Sunday.

The spokesperson said the opposition delegation will be heading to Geneva to test the intention of the Syrian government in reaching a peaceful settlement to end the war.

On Friday, the HNC decided to participate in the talks after receiving assurances from the United Nations and the United States, despite its announcement to boycott the talks which the United Nations had refused to postpone.

The first round of talks is expected to end before Feb. 11, the date for the Geneva summit to evaluate the progress of the talks. Endit
