China rescues over 13,000 people from the sea in 2015

Xinhua, January 28, 2016 Adjust font size:

China rescued a total of 13,727 people in 1,884 maritime search and rescue missions in 2015, according to the Ministry of Transport on Thursday.

The country has been improving its capability to deal with emergency cases at sea by setting up an emergency hotline and using drones or remote sensing satellites.

A new emergency mechanism to deal with major oil spills at sea will be put in place in the next five years, said Zhuo Li, deputy head of China Maritime Search and Rescue Center at a press conference.

By then, China will be able to handle 1,000 tonnes of spilled oil anywhere offshore within 50 nautical miles of the national coastline, according to Zhuo. Endit
