1st LD Writethru: Myanmar's opposition nominates new parliamentary speakers

Myanmar's election-winning opposition party, the National League for Democracy (NLD), nominated on Thursday two elected parliament representatives to act as new speakers of the two Houses of the next term of the parliament, according to NLD sources.

U Win Myint of NLD is selected for nomination as speaker of the House of Representatives (Lower House) , while U Mann Win Khaing Than of NLD is reserved for speaker of the House of Nationalities (Upper House), NLD parliament representative Daw Khin San Hlaing quoted Aung San Suu Kyi as telling Xinhua.

U Win Myint, currently a member of the House of Representative from Pathein constituency, was re-elected to the same House from Tammwe constituency in the 2015 general election.

U Mann Win Khaing Than, who is a parliamentary lawyer, was elected to the House of Nationalities from Kayin state constituency in the general election.

Besides, U Ti Kun Myat, a Kachin ethnic parliament representative from current ruling Union Solidrity and Development Party (USDP) re-elected from Kutkai constituency, was nominated as deputy speaker of the House of Representatives, while U Aye Tha Aung, a Rakhine ethnic parliament representative of the Arakan National Party (ANP) elected from Rakhine state, was nominated as deputy speaker of the House of Nationalities.

Myanmar's two Houses of the newly-elected parliament are due to start its first sessions in Nay Pyi Taw later on Monday following the end of the previous term on Jan. 30. Endit
