Nearly 400 mln USD needed to help 3.5 mln most vulnerable Afghans in 2016

Xinhua, January 28, 2016 Adjust font size:

The humanitarian community in Afghanistan on Wednesday appealed for 393 million U.S. dollars to help the most vulnerable and marginalized Afghans, a UN spokesman told reporters here.

"The funding is expected to provide food as well as access to health care, nutrition, drinking water and sanitation to an estimated 3.5 million people," UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said at a daily news briefing here.

Last year alone, more than 300,000 people in Afghanistan fled their homes due to conflict, marking a 160 percent increase compared with the same period in 2014.

"The country is also prone to natural disasters, including floods and earthquakes," Dujarric said. "The earthquake that struck the north-eastern province of Badakhshan in October left an estimated 130,000 people in need of humanitarian assistance." Enditem
