Israeli critically injured in Palestinian attack near Jerusalem, stabber arrested

Xinhua, January 28, 2016 Adjust font size:

A Palestinian stabbed and seriously wounded an Israeli before being caught by security forces on Wednesday night, police said, in the latest incident in a surge of Israeli-Palestinian violence.

Police spokeswoman Luba Samri said the attack occurred at a gas station restaurant in Pisgat Zeev, a settlement neighborhood in northern Jerusalem.

Channel 2 TV news reported that people in the restaurant chased away the attacker. Samri confirmed that he was later caught and taken into custody.

The suspect severely injured an Israeli in his 50s by stabbings to his neck, said Zaki Heller, a spokesman for Israel's emergency medical service. "He was evacuated to a hospital in Jerusalem in an unstable condition," he added.

At least 150 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire since the beginning of the wave of violence in mid-September. In the same time, 25 Israelis and a U.S. citizen died in Palestinian stabbing, car-ramming, and shooting attacks.

Israel has been accusing the Palestinian National Authority of "inciting" the violence while the Palestinians say it is the result of 49 years of Israeli control of their lands. Endit
