Indian gov't to look into incident of fake police encounter with rebels in northeast state

Xinhua, January 27, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Indian government on Wednesday promised to look into the confession of a police commando that he killed an unarmed person in 2009 in a fake encounter with insurgents in the northeast state of Manipur, said local media.

The Press Trust of India quoted Home Minister Rajnath Singh as saying that he would "get the information" and "look into it."

A Manipur police head had reportedly confessed that he shot a 22-year-old man as a suspected member of the insurgent group "People's Liberation Army" in a busy market area in Imphal on July 23, 2009.

The officer, Thounaojam Herojit Singh, has reportedly accepted that the victim was not carrying arms.

The Indian government has imposed a state of emergency with special power granted to the military and police to arrest, search and even shoot suspected insurgents in Manipur, a restive northeast state bordering Myanmar where some insurgents are waging a low intensity war with Indian security forces.

Similar emergency is also in force in Indian-controlled Kashmir. Enditem
