China to meet Spain, Venezuela for Rio Olympic women's basketball tournament

The Chinese women's basketball team will meet their Spanish and Venezuelan counterparts in the qualifying tournament to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games after the draw took place in FIBA's headquarters here on Tuesday.

The qualifying tournament for women will run from June 13 to 19 in Nantes, France. China, Spain and Venezuela will be in Group D.

After finishing second in last year's Asian Championships, the Chinese women had to vie for the last five spots of the Rio Olympics. To better prepare for the tournament, the Chinese team has released a 16-women list on Tuesday, including 32-year-old center Chen Nan.

China will meet Venezuela on June 13, and Spain one day later.

Cuba, New Zealand and France are in Group A, with Cameroon, Turkey and Argentina in Group B, Belarus, South Korea and Nigeria in Group C.

Men's matches will be held in Belgrade (Serbia), Manila (Philippines) and Turin (Italy) from July 4 to 10.

In Belgrade, Serbia, Angola, Puerto Rico are in Group A, with Japan, the Czech Republic, Latvia in Group B. In Manila, Turkey, Senegal, Canada are in Group A, with France, New Zealand, the Philippines in Group B. In Turin, Greece, Mexico, Iran are in Group A, with Tunisia, Croatia, Italy in Group B.

As Asian champion last year, the Chinese men's team has secured a place in Rio with eight other teams. The last three will be decided in the qualifying tournament. Endit
