Lebanese army arrests terrorist group leader

Xinhua, January 27, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Lebanese General Security Directorate (GSD) said Tuesday that it has arrested a Lebanese who admitted to belonging to a terrorist group and fighting against the Lebanese army in 2013.

According to a communique issued by GSD, the man, whom it identified with his initials as M.B., "was seized as part of its monitoring of terrorist groups and dormant cells."

It added that the suspect admitted to investigators that he belongs to the al-Qaida-linked Abdullah Azzam Brigades and is in charge of an armed group that works under its umbrella.

The man confirmed that he had been trained on the use of arms and the preparation of explosives, and was active in recruiting fighters and providing them with financial and logistics support, said the communique.

He also told GSD officers that he had participated in the battles against the Lebanese army in the Abra suburb of the southern city of Sidon.

The Abdullah Azzam Brigades claimed responsibility for several terrorist attacks, particularly the attack against the embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Beirut on Nov. 19, 2013, which led to 23 people killed and 146 others injured. Endit
