Kuwait grants Jordan 20 mln USD to support Syrian refugees

Xinhua, January 26, 2016 Adjust font size:

Jordan and Kuwait signed Monday an deal to grant 20 million U.S. dollars supporting Jordan's efforts in servicing Syrian refugees, reported the state-run Petra news agency.

Economists determined that each Syrian refugee costs Jordan about 300 dollars a month.

Jordan's Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, Emad Fakhoury, said the grant will finance projects in education, health and infrastructure to improve services delivered to Syrian refugees.

The grant, he said, comes following an appeal by Jordan last year to increase funds to continue providing services to Syrian refugees.

He added that the grant will also reduce the pressure on Jordan, currently hosting 1.4 million Syrian refugees.

According to Fakhoury, due to the regional instability and the fallout from the Syrian crisis, Jordan faces several economic challenges.

Fakhoury then called on the international community to augment its aid to Jordan.

"The international community has a responsibility during this critical time in order to support Jordan's humanitarian role towards Syrian refugees," said the minister. Enditem
