Kenya's Sevens rugby coach targets Wellington World Series conquest

Xinhua, January 26, 2016 Adjust font size:

As Kenya prepares to return to the World Rugby Series in Wellington this weekend, head Coach Benjamin Ayimba has cautioned nobody is untouchable in the squad.

"The World Series is going to be used to gauge the players' preparation. But again, it gives me a headache on who to go with as the players are inspired to deliver the results," he said on Monday.

Shujaa bounced back from their dismal performance in the Dubai Series, the first leg of the 2015/16 Sevens World Series, to finish fourth in Cape Town, South Africa in November before the circuit took a break.

They are in Group D with Australia, Portugal and Canada.

With the team's current impressive form and plethora of options of players at his disposal, the most celebrated coach in the country has admitted that he will have tough decisions to make when choosing the Brazil squad.

"We started off very well with the Olympics qualifiers in South Africa, then got reality check in Dubai but responded swiftly in Cape Town. In all those competitions we have used different players and all of them have proved their worthiness," said Ayimba.

"The Series is part of our preparations for the Olympics and that's why we are giving everybody a chance to prove himself. But from the performance in the first two legs, it is not going to be easy to select the Rio squad," he added.

Ayumba has since recalled captain Andrew Amonde and his predecessor Humphrey Khayange to the team. Amonde and Khayange missed the Dubai and Cape Town rounds due to personal commitment and injury respectively.

Ayimba has also handed Donald Aluoch his maiden call-up and is expected to debut in Wellington after the axing of Frank Wanyama, Jeffery Oluoch and Robert Aringo, who debuted in the first two legs. Endit
