Number of Swiss living abroad passes three-quarter mln mark

Xinhua, January 26, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) reported on Monday that 761,930 Swiss citizens were living outside of Switzerland at the end of 2015, up from 746,885 two years ago.

With the number of Swiss nationals residing abroad growing by over two percent every year, FDFA found that 198,647 Swiss citizens lived in France, the biggest host nation for the Swiss community.

Germany, with 86,774 Swiss nationals registered, came in second, followed by the United States (80,218), Italy (51,556), Canada (39,869) and Britain (33,745).

The number of Swiss living in Asia increased the most again last year, with a rise of 3.5 percent. As of the end of 2015, China was host to some 3,992 registered Swiss nationals.

Though most countries in the world have seen at least one Swiss person put down roots, FDFA indicated that six out of ten Swiss citizens living abroad do so in Europe, with three quarters of the latter in country's immediately bordering the confederation. Enditem
