2nd LD Writethru: 7 killed in Taliban attack in S. Afghanistan

Xinhua, January 25, 2016 Adjust font size:

Seven persons were killed in explosions and gunfight after Taliban attacked a police station in Afghanistan's southern town of Spin Boldak on Monday, police said.

"The clash erupted at around midday after gunmen armed with suicide vests and weapons stormed an Afghan Border Police station in Spin Boldak of Kandahar province bordering Pakistan," provincial police spokesman Zia Durrani told Xinhua.

Those killed included five attackers and two Afghan Border Police (ABP) personnel, he said.

"Five members of ABP personnel were wounded by the clash. The attacked building gives home to a battalion of the ABP in the district south of provincial capital Kandahar city," Durrani said.

At least two explosions occurred during the clash which lasted for half an hour, he added.

The Taliban claimed the responsibility for the attack.

The Taliban-led insurgency has been rampant since April when the militant group launched its annual rebel offensive against security forces.

Kandahar and the neighboring Helmand province are notorious for poppy growing and militancy. Enditem
