Earthquakes hit northern Morocco

Xinhua, January 25, 2016 Adjust font size:

A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck early Monday in the Mediterranean between Morocco and Spain, the Moroccan National Institute of Geophysics said in a statement.

The quake was recorded off the northern city of Nador at 4:34 a.m. (0434 GMT), the Moroccan National Institute of Geophysics said.

It was followed by a 5.3-magnitude tremor.

No casualties have been reported, but many residents of Nador and neighboring towns left their houses, according to local media reports.

In 2004, a 6.3 magnitude quake struck neighboring Hoceima city, claiming the lives of hundreds of people and leaving thousands homeless. Endit
