Authorities intensify security in Kashmir ahead of India's Republic Day

Xinhua, January 25, 2016 Adjust font size:

Authorities in Indian-controlled Kashmir Monday intensified security and surveillance ahead of India's Republic Day, officials said.

The steps were taken to thwart possible attempts by suspected militants to disrupt official celebrations, police said.

"Multi-tier security has been put in place across the Jammu and Kashmir (Indian-controlled Kashmir) in the run up to the Republic Day," the region's topmost police official K Rajendra told media.

Security has been heightened around important locations and offices.

"Sensitive locations like airport, railway stations, military establishments, police stations, important offices like secretariat in both Srinagar and Jammu, etc., have been put under security blanket and are under constant surveillance," a police official said. Endit
