Fair play stressed in enrolling sports undergraduates

Xinhua, January 22, 2016 Adjust font size:

China is to encourage universities to form quality sports teams by offering special entry condition for students with a level of sporting ability, the Ministry of Education (MOE) announced on Friday.

Universities will be allowed to enlist one percent of their students on sport scholarships, with a special focus of team sports, especially soccer teams a pet project of central authorities.

Candidates applying for the program must demonstrate high sporting ability but can attain reduced score in the national college entrance examination.

In principle, the MOE said, sports students may be admitted if their exam scores are no lower than 65 percent of the provincial second tier admission line.

Candidates are also required to take drug tests before evaluation.

In February of 2015, China's Leading Group for Overall Reform, headed by President Xi Jinping, approved a plan to pay special attention to soccer in education. Endi
