Tokyo shares open slightly higher on yen's retreat

Tokyo shares opened the trading Thursday slightly higher following the U.S. dollar's advance against the Japanese yen as the latter's retreat boosted export-oriented issues.

At 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 72.26 points, or 0.44 percent, from Wednesday to 16,488.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 3.84 points, or 0.29 percent, at 1,342.81. Endit
