Xinhua, January 21, 2016 Adjust font size:

Cuba will be represented by at least 58 athletes in nine disciplines during the upcoming Olympic Games 2016 to be held in Rio de Janeiro, an official announced on Wednesday.

The figure (42 men and 16 women) could increase in the coming months as there are still 268 athletes to attend different qualifying events in 10 disciplines, High Performance Director at the National Sports Institute (INDER), Jose Miranda, told reporters.

The list is led by athletics with 11 men and 12 ladies, followed by male volleyball with 12 participants, according to Miranda.

The list also includes boxing (7), Greco-Roman wrestling (2), rowing (3), modern pentathlon (2), shooting (7), gymnastics (1), and canoeing (1).

In the last Olympics held in London, 2012, the island came in 16th place out of 204 delegations with five golds, three silvers and six bronze medals. This was the best performance in Latin America and the Caribbean that year.

According to Miranda, 39 athletes are in with a real chance of climbing the podium.

The goal is to stay among the top 20 countries and improve on the results from 2012. Endit
