Xinhua, January 21, 2016 Adjust font size:

Over 24,000 birds have been culled in northeast Nigeria's Adamawa following the outbreak of bird flu in the state, an official in charge of animal resources said on Wednesday.

The culled birds comprised 24,000 chickens, 456 guinea fowl, 250 peacocks and 54 turkeys, the state Commissioner for Livestock Production, Isa Salihu told Xinhua in Yola, the state capital.

The affected poultry farms have been quarantined while precautionary measures have been taken to curtail the spread of the bird flu, Salihu said.

He added that the state government has commenced sensitization campaign for people to avoid having contact with dead birds or eating unhealthy birds. Endit
