Latvian president to undergo heart surgery

Latvian President Raimonds Vejonis will undergo heart surgery on Wednesday after medics diagnosed him with a septic infection that has affected his heart valves.

Local media reported citing representatives of Pauls Stradins Hospital, Vejonis has been placed in the hospital's cardiology center.

A team of cardiologists and surgeons have decided a heart surgery is necessary to deal with the source of infection.

Vejonis was taken to Riga Eastern Clinical University Hospital on Monday with what his spokesman Gusts Kikusts described as a virus infection.

On Tuesday, Vejonis was transferred to Pauls Stradins Hospital. Endit
