Third seed Garbine Muguruza easily advances to Aus Open second round

Xinhua, January 19, 2016 Adjust font size:

Spain's Garbine Muguruza has done her third seed ranking no harm on day two of the Australian Open, after she was on court for all of 60 minutes during her first-round demolition of Anett Kontaveit.

Fans barely had time to get to their seats on the center court before the 22-year-old Muguruza swept her Estonian opponent off the court, 6-0, 6-4.

It was the first time the 2015 Wimbledon finalist has played a tennis match since withdrawing from the Brisbane International with a foot injury two weeks ago, but following her win she told the crowd she felt fully fit.

"I had a few problems in my foot but I think I am recovered now," she said on Tuesday.

It is the first time Muguruza has been seeded in the top four, and she admitted it adds a little extra pressure. However she said now she has won her first round match she can resume focus on playing good tennis.

"I am very happy. I was very nervous," she said.

"Every match is very different. You always have to be prepared, always have to be ready for the other player to make a great performance.

"Always the first rounds are really tough but I'm really excited to be back here and into the second round."

Muguruza will face one-time Wimbledon semi-finalist Kirsten Flipkens in the second round, after the Belgian won in three sets against Mirjana Lucic-Baroni. Endit
