Mozambican gov't on alert over opposition's alleged military recruitment

Xinhua, January 18, 2016 Adjust font size:

Mozambicque's Defence Minister Jaime Monteiro said on Monday the government was on alert over alleged information that the main opposition party Renamo was recruiting young people for military training in the central province of Sofala.

Monteiro, who was touring the northwestern province of Tete, told state radio "the government is checking the truth of the information so that measures can be taken."

Monteiro said there is no room for violence in the country.

"We want to assure that any threat, even if it is little, there will be an answer from our part. We don't want violence," he added.

The allegations follow the surrender of some armed Renamo men to the government in central Mozambique, including Sofala, Manica and Tete provinces, in the last few months.

They tell the media they are tired of "living in the bush".

Monteiro expressed his satisfaction to their attitude, saying they can be integrated into the army and the police.

Renamo and the government were once involved in a 16-year civil war which killed more than a million people. The war ended in 1992, under a peace accord they signed in Rome, Italy. Endit
