Express train trapped on bridge for 2 hours by high wind in western Japan

Xinhua, January 18, 2016 Adjust font size:

An express train with 160 passengers on board was halted for over two hours on the Great Seto Bridge in western Japan due to strong wind on Monday, local media reported.

The five-carriage express train of JR Shikoku set off at 5:42 p.m. local time from Okayama station for Kagawa prefecture on the island of Shikoku, and was forced to stop on the Great Seto Bridge around 6:10 p.m. due to high wind with speed exceeding 25 meters per second.

The Great Seto Bridge is a series of double deck bridges connecting Okayama and Kagawa prefectures across a series of small islands in the Seto Inland Sea. It is the only railway route connecting Japan's Honshu and Shikoku islands.

The train resumed operation around 8:30 p.m. No one was hurt.

As strong wind was expected to continue, part of the railway line between Okayama and Kagawa was closed for the rest of the day, and whether to resume operation on Tuesday is yet to be decided. Endit
