Myanmar VP calls for establishing federal union

Xinhua, January 16, 2016 Adjust font size:

Myanmar Vice President Dr Sai Mauk Kham on Saturday called for establishing a federal union blessed with democracy, peace and development during the final day of five-day union peace conference held in Nay Pyi Taw.

The five-day union peace conference was held ahead of the national-level first round of formal political dialogue between the government and eight ceasefired armed groups.

Sai firmly believed that the building of federal union with people's desired political system has a good beginning.

Peace process establishment and the negotiated points at the union peace conference will be handed over to the upcoming new government.

Minister at the President's Office U Aung Min also expressed his hope on emerging better results of agreement and discussion from the upcoming peace conferences during the new government term.

The topics set for discussions at the peace conference are mainly politics, security, economic and social issues and land and natural resources policy.

These issues respectively cover establishment of a democratic federal union, revenue distribution and taxation, internally displaced persons, security, natural resources management and distribution.

The discussion record related to five issues by respective groups will be forwarded to Myanmar President U Thein Sein, U Aung Min said.

The conference is the biggest gathering of political forces in the country in over six decades after independence in 1948.

The peace conference involves hundreds of representatives from stakeholder groups of the government, parliament, military and eight ethnic armed groups out of 15, who signed the Nationwide Cease fire Accord (NCA), as well as some other political parties and players. Enditem
