Four militants killed in S. Afghan attack

Xinhua, January 16, 2016 Adjust font size:

Some four militants were killed after a clash broke out near a police station in Afghanistan's southern province of Kandahar on Saturday, police said.

"The four assailants tried to assault a police station in remote Afghanistan district in the morning. Police identified and intercepted them, triggering a gunfight lasting for hours. The clash caused four militants killed while no member of the police unit was harmed during the attack," the provincial police spokesman Zia Durrani told Xinhua.

A Taliban group commander Mullah Hezatullah was among the killed while four guns and ammunition were also sized by the police after the clash, the source noted.

The militants' bodies were taken to district police station before being handed over to Afghan Red Crescent Society.

Kandahar province is notorious for poppy growing and militancy.

The Taliban has intensified attacks across the country since the start of this year, which coincides with the potential resumption of government-Taliban peace talks.

Separately, some 94 militants have been killed, 24 wounded and 20 others were detained during army operations in five of the country's 34 provinces since early Friday, the country's Defense Ministry said in a statement earlier on Saturday.

The statement also confirmed loss of two army soldiers in separate attacks across the country. Enditem
