Rwanda to hold local govt elections in February

Rwanda is set to hold its local government elections in February, the National Electoral Commission (NEC) announced Friday.

The voting will be kicked off on Feb. 8 with elections of grassroots leaders, elected through adult suffrage.

This will be followed by district council elections on Feb. 22, then, on Feb. 27, district mayors will be elected.

The climax will be on March 2 with the election of City of Kigali mayor and his or her executive committee as well as representatives of special interest groups, including women, youth and people living with disabilities.

Briefing journalists in Kigali, Charles Munyaneza, the executive secretary of NEC, said incumbent mayors of the country's 30 districts and the City of Kigali expected to vacate their seats on Jan. 29, ahead of the elections.

"The mayors' mandates were supposed to end in March 2016 because they were elected in March 2011 but they have to vacate their offices on Jan. 29 to facilitate the electoral process," said Munyaneza.

Rwanda's local government leaders serve a mandate of five years. Endit
