Rio de Janeiro zoo closed for overcrowding, poor conditions

Brazil's oldest zoo in Rio de Janeiro was ordered Thursday to close owing to overcrowding of animals, poor sanitation, crumbling infrastructure and other problems.

The Brazilian Institute for the Environment ordered the closure of the the municipal zoo of Rio de Janeiro and said that the municipality of Rio would be fined 1,000 reais (250 U.S. dollars) a day until these deficiencies were rectified.

The zoo will be allowed to reopen only if it takes appropriate measures, including providing "adequate food in clean environment" for each species.

The municipal government of Rio had already announced a plan to hand over the management of the zoo to a company through a public-private partnership. Endi
