UN Security Council condemns terror attacks in Jakarta, Indonesia

Xinhua, January 15, 2016 Adjust font size:

United Nations Security Council on Thursday condemned in the strongest terms the bombings and gun attacks in Jakarta, capital of Indonesia, for which terror group Islamic State (IS) has claimed responsibility, said the council in a press statement.

Earlier on Thursday, bomb explosions and gun fires took place in downtown Jakarta, killing seven people and injured 20 others.

The members of the Security Council expressed their deep sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims and to the people and government of Indonesia and wished the injured a speedy recovery, said the statement.

They paid tribute to the swift response and courage of the Indonesian security forces in responding to this attack, it said.

In light of the recent spate of terrorist attacks around the world, the council "expressed serious concern with the continued threat posed to international peace and security by IS, Al-Qaida, and associated individuals, groups, undertakings, and entities," it said.

The council reiterated that any acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation, wherever, whenever and by whomsoever committed, it said.

The IS has not carried out terrorist attacks in Southeast Asia before. The Jakarta police said the IS changed strategy by establishing branches across nations, including in the Southeast Asia region. Enditem
