U.S. denounces terrorist attack in Indonesian capital

Xinhua, January 15, 2016 Adjust font size:

The United States strongly condemns the terrorist attack in Jakarta, Indonesia's capital, which killed seven people and injured 20 others, State Department said Thursday.

"We extend our condolences to the families of those killed, and we wish a quick and full recovery to those injured," State Department spokesman John Kirby said in a statement.

Five attackers and two civilians -- one Canadian and one Indonesian -- died in the attack Thursday in Jakarta's bustling business district. Extremist group the Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attack.

"We stand firmly with the Indonesian people against terrorism and extremist ideologies that give rise to terrorist violence," Kirby said.

The spokesman added that the U.S. will continue working with its Indonesian partners and others around the world to combat these shared threats. Endit
