The African Union (AU) on Thursday announced resumption of peace talks between Sudan government and the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM)/northern sector in the German capital Berlin on Jan. 22, Sudan's Ashorooq Net reported.
"A new round of negotiations will be held between the Sudanese government and the SPLM/northern sector in Berlin, in cooperation with the African mechanism and the German government, with the aim to resolve the outstanding issues between the two sides," Mahmoud Kan, chairman of the AU liaison office in Khartoum, was quoted as saying.
In December 2015, informal negotiations were held between the two sides in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa where the two parties agreed on the importance of ending the war and involving all parties in the national dialogue.
Kan also said the African mediation would hold a separate round of peace talks between Khartoum and the Darfur armed groups on Jan. 23 at Debre Zebit town, 50 km from the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa.
The Sudanese government has been fighting rebel armed groups in Sudan's Darfur region since 2003, while South Kordofan and Blue Nile have been witnessing armed clashes between the Sudanese army and the SPLM/northern sector rebels since 2011.
So far, 10 rounds of peace talks between the Sudanese government and the SPLM/northern sector in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa have failed to end the conflict in the two areas.
Peace talks between the Sudanese government and the Darfur armed movements have also so far failed to reach cessation of hostilities. Endit
