Uganda vies to host ICC Women's Twenty20 World Cup qualifiers

Xinhua, January 15, 2016 Adjust font size:

Uganda is vying to host the 2018 International Cricket Council (ICC) Women Twenty20 Cricket World Cup qualifiers.

Uganda Cricket Association Chief Executive Officer, Justine Ligyalingi told Xinhua on Thursday that they have applied to the Africa Cricket Association and ICC to host the qualifiers.

"We have hosted several big international tournaments before and I think we have the capacity to host these qualifiers as well if given chance," said Ligyalingi.

Ligyalingi disclosed that although Kenya and Tanzania have also applied to host the event slated for March, he is positive Uganda will be granted the opportunity to host the event.

He explained that besides being a World Cup qualifier, the tournament will also be Africa's Women's Twenty20 Championship as per the Africa Cricket Association (AFA) calendar.

Six nations Kenya, Uganda, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Uganda and South Africa will take part in the event.

The winner at the qualifiers will qualify for the next stage of the qualifiers. Uganda failed to qualify for the 2016 ICC World Twenty20 World Cup event to run in India from March 8 to April 3.

The tournament was first held in 2009, when hosts England won the tournament. The most recent champions are Australia, who won the tournament and retained the trophy in 2014.

Ligyalingi also disclosed that the Uganda team already started training under coaches Jonathan Ssebanja and Grace Mutagubya. Endit
