6 die in landslides in south Burundi province

Xinhua, January 15, 2016 Adjust font size:

Six persons were killed in landslides triggered by heavy rains that hit south Burundi's Makamba province on Wednesday, local authorities said on Thursday.

"Three children and their mother were killed in a landslide at Ndora in Vugizo District while they were doing farming activities. Another landslide occurred at Bukinda in Nyanza-Lac District, killing a woman and her child. They were also doing farming activities," said Makamba Province Governor Gad Niyukuri.

According to him, the rains also unroofed at least 25 houses, leaving dozens of families homeless.

"We call on the government and charity organizations to come and assist the victims," said Niyukuri.

Rains also hit the capital city Bujumbura overnight, destroying some infrastructures.

The bridge on River Muha on the Large Avenue was partly destroyed, disrupting traffic on Thursday as only small cars, motorcycles and bicycles were only allowed to cross the bridge. Endit
