Mumbai Police urges people not to take selfies near seaside

Xinhua, January 14, 2016 Adjust font size:

Mumbai Police have appealed to people not to take selfies on mobile phones at 15 spots, including some major tourist attractions along the seaside, across city.

A senior police official said Thursday the decision has been taken in the wake of a tragic incident Saturday when three girls trying to take a selfie near the sea in the Bandra fell into the water.

While two girls were saved by a passerby, one of them and the 37-year-old man, who had jumped into the sea to save the trio, were washed away by the choppy waters.

"We have identified at least 15 places in the city where taking selfies on mobile phones could be dangerous," the official said.

He added: "The places include Bandra Bandstand, Sion Fort and Worli Fort, all places popular with tourists. We will ask the civic body to install warning signs at all the risky spots."

Taking selfies on the seaside in Mumbai is a trend, particularly among the youth, but there have been instances of people felling into the waters unnoticed. Endit
