Direct rail service connects ethnic regions

Xinhua, January 13, 2016 Adjust font size:

A new rail route connecting two of China's ethnic autonomous regions has begun service.

A train coded T281 arrived on Wednesday morning in Nanning, capital of the southern Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, after 64-hour journey. It departed from Urumqi, capital of the northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, on Sunday night.

It is the first direct rail route linking the two regions, according to the Nanning Railway Bureau. Previously, passengers from Xinjiang had to transfer via the cities of Xi'an, Zhengzhou, Chongqing or Chengdu if they wanted to reach Guangxi.

Spanning 4,608 km, the new route has stops at 35 train stations in seven provinces or regions, covering a number of tourist attractions.

Authorities expect the rail service to boost local tourism along the route. Endi
