FIFA announces immediate dismissal of secretary general Valcke

Xinhua, January 13, 2016 Adjust font size:

FIFA on Wednesday announced the immediate dismissal of its secretary general Jerome Valcke, who is under investigation for misconduct.

"The FIFA emergency committee decided, on 9 January 2016, to dismiss Jerome Valcke from the position of FIFA secretary general with immediate effect," said a statement from the world soccer governing body.

Frenchman Valcke, the former right-hand man to FIFA president Sepp Blatter who had been banned for eight years, was suspended on Sept. 17 after the FIFA ethics committee started an inquiry into allegations that he helped sell 2014 World Cup tickets on the black market.

Valcke has also been linked to a 10-million-dollar payment made by South Africa to corruption-tainted former Caribbean football chief Jack Warner. U.S. investigators believe this was a bribe to secure votes for the 2010 World Cup.

However, Valcke has denied all wrongdoing. Endit
