Guatemala arrests former football federation president as part of FIFA scandal

The Guatemalan police arrested the former president of its football federation, Brayan Jimenez, on Tuesday, as part of the FIFA corruption scandal.

The U.S. Justice Department has already asked for Jimenez's extradition.

Jimenez, who fled when news of his involvement in the scandal broke, was caught in a flat block south of Guatemala City. He had apparently sought to change his appearance, with grey hair, a beard and having lost a lot of weight.

This case also involves Hector Trujillo, ex-secretary general of the Guatemalan football federation.

According to the U.S., Jimenez and Trujillo negotiated with a company named Media World in February 2015 to grant it the exclusive broadcasting rights for Guatemala's 2022 World Cup qualifying matches. It is alleged the two men received 200,000 U.S. dollars in bribes.

The former sports executive is currently being held by the Guatemalan authorities, ahead of a ruling on whether to extradite him to the U.S. Endit
