EU, Indonesia top diplomats speak on tension between Iran, Saudi Arabia

Xinhua, January 13, 2016 Adjust font size:

European Union (EU) foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini on Tuesday morning spoke via phone call with Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi on the current tension between Iran and Saudi Arabia.

According to a press release issued by the European External Action Service, they also spoke to coordinate messages ahead of the visit of the Indonesian foreign minister to Iran and Saudi Arabia.

The press release said they agreed on the need to reduce tensions in the region.

They shared the view that the current tension could have "important negative consequences, not only for bilateral relations but also for the region, the Syrian process and for Muslim communities all around the world, from South-East Asia to Europe."

They finally agreed to continue cooperating on future initiatives that could help appease the situation, it said.

Iran and Saudi Arabia are currently locked in a diplomatic row over Sunni-majority Riyadh's execution of a prominent Shiite cleric, along with 46 others over terror charges.

The executions have sent large number of Iranians onto the street, while some of them stormed Saudi diplomatic missions in capital Tehran and the northeastern city of Mashhad. Later, Riyadh cut its diplomatic ties with Tehran over the attack on its embassy. The row between the two regional powers has raised concern over whether the Syrian and Yemeni peace process will be affected. Endit
