Egypt's Cassation Court on Saturday rejected an appeal of former President Hosni Mubarak and confirmed a three-year jail sentence against him and his two sons over corruption charges, the state-run MENA news agency reported.
The 87-year-old defendant was sentenced to three years in jail without parole on May 9 in a retrial, along with his sons, Alaa and Gamal, over charges of squandering 125 million Egyptian Pounds (about 16 million U.S. dollars) of the financial allocations of presidential palaces.
It was not immediately clear whether Mubarak would serve this sentence considering the pre-trial detention he had served since his arrest in 2011, months after his ouster, while his two sons were released in October.
The long-time ruler of Egypt also faces other charges that he was responsible for the killing of protesters during the 2011 social unrest that ended his 30-year rule. The final verdict of this trail will be issued on Jan. 21 following several retrials and delays.
Mubarak is currently kept custody in a military hospital in Cairo where he spent most of the time since his arrest. Enditem
