ASEAN condemns DPRK nuclear test

Xinhua, January 8, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) issued a statement on Friday, condemning the recent nuclear test by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).

The statement said DPRK's nuclear test is in violation of the relevant United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions.

"On 6 January 2016, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) conducted another nuclear test, which is in violation of the relevant United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions", said a statement from the ASEAN foreign ministers.

In the statement, ASEAN reaffirms the importance of peace and security on the Korean Peninsula and reiterates its full support for the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula in a peaceful manner.

"We urge the DPRK to comply with all the relevant UNSC resolutions and call on all parties concerned to exert common efforts to maintain peace and security in the said region and create an environment conducive to the early resumption of the Six-Party Talks to help pave the way for maintaining and strengthening peace, security and stability in the region and the world", said the statement.

The DPRK announced on Wednesday that it has successfully carried out its first "hydrogen bomb" test. Endit
