Hundreds of families were evacuated in the western part of Albania after some rivers broke their banks following heavy rain, local media reported on Thursday.

Thousands of hectares of land were flooded after heavy rains battered the area. The flood also damaged homes, destroyed roads and killed livestock, Albanian Daily News reported.

Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama visited Sukth, a town in western Albania where armed forces have evacuated more than 80 families. The evacuation was done by boats or helicopter.

Rama assured local residents that the support from all the state structures will remain at the maximal level. He also asked the citizens to take measures to protect their businesses and homes through insurance.

The army said it was ready to evacuate people affected by the severe flood and other cases of emergency. Enditem
